What is a car gearbox? What is it for?

It is the reason why many purists still prefer manual boxes. However, as technology advances, this limitation is already being forgotten.
It is due, in part, to the “manual mode” that many automatic gearboxes incorporate, adding an optional configuration to intervene more actively in the passage of changes. In this sense, the impulse modes work – which enables occasional manual interventions without ever stopping automatic changes – and sequential – allows only manual changes, often through paddles on the steering wheel.

Automatic boxes are usually more technologically sophisticated than manual boxes and, therefore, more expensive. Once you get used to the automatic gearbox, the manual will likely be distracting and pointless unless you belong to the tribe of old-school “trailer” drivers.

- Before buying, know what type of automatic gearbox the chosen model has if it has an impulse or sequential manual mode, steering wheel paddles, and an “eco” and “sport” mode. Any of these variables, beyond costs, will decisively influence your driving experience and fuel management. We don’t necessarily recommend going for the most well-equipped combination – that will depend on your budget – but we recommend fully knowing which features you’re getting and which you’re sacrificing.
