Legendary Edition” is the original base game packaged with the expansions. It is identical to buying the game and expansions separately.

It’s available on PC, 360, and PS3. “Special Edition” features an enhanced remake of the game engine, also released with all expansions as a single item. It’s available on PC, XB1, PS4, and Switch. (The Switch version is slightly sucky.)

The below-listed changes may not be exhaustive; they’re just what I could find on the matter.

Technical & graphical changes:

  • LE is 32-bit; SE is 64-bit
    • Mods are not inter-compatible between the two; by this time, nearly every mod has been ported to SE and all “vital” ones are working
    • Mods (and game in general) are more stable and run better with more stuff happening at once
  • Better (vanilla) graphics (mods could already do basically all of this)
    • Built-in god ray support
    • Rain and snow no longer go through walls and ceilings
    • Trees look way better
    • The water looks way better
    • Long hair can show from underneath helmets
  • Except for PS4, audio appears to have been compressed improperly and is actually worse than the original game’s.

Gameplay & content changes:

  • (Most) console players can now install user-made mods
    • XB1 players have 5.0GB of space
    • PS4 players have 1.0GB of space + mods are only able to use official assets already included in the vanilla game
    • Switch players have nothing -_-
  • Creation Club offers curated / “official” mods but requires Real Money to purchase and download them
  • Player movement is much more similar to Fallout 4 than before.
    • You only need to tap Sprint once to keep sprinting. So, you will stop sprinting when you stop moving, not when you release the key
    • You wiggle when you stop moving instead of stopping dead.
    • You are no longer able to sprint-jump.
  • It is no longer possible to skip multiple level-ups by canceling very quickly on PC; you have to take at least two in a row. (It is still possible to take only one at a time on console.)
  • You can loot the Imperial Torturer’s hood if you escape from Helgen with the Stormcloaks.
    • You can also get this hood from randomly spawning thieves.
  • There are more spawn points for harvestable plants
  • Vampire NPCs are considerably weaker than before
  • Some NPC dialogue has been re-recorded or expanded upon

Quality of life changes:

  • Way faster load times
  • Segregates you save files by character
  • You can press F5 to quick save and F9 to quick load (as in Morrowind.) This is separate from all autosaves and manual saves.

Switch version changes:

  • No user mods
  • Looks worse (but better than the original game did on 360/PS3)
  • Optional motion controls
  • Amiibo support
  • Breath of the Wild Link outfit
    • (I am 100% certain every other version of Skyrim has dozens of Link outfit mods)

Bug fixes:

  • Basically none 🙂

Skyrim legendary edition vs special edition

Skyrim Legendary comes first before Skyrim Special Edition. The only difference is the improved graphics in the special edition.

For More stability choose Special Edition since its 64-bit engine, while the Legendary Edition has an only 32-bit engine which makes it less stable.

The legendary edition has lots of new mods than the Special Edition.

Although Special Edition has fewer mods, it has better graphics which makes it advantageous to Legendary Edition.

The original game, official add-ons, and added features like combat cameras are all included in the Legendary Edition. As well as the Legendary difficulty mode for hardcore players and Legendary Skills.

Skyrim Special Edition brings the epic fantasy to life in stunning detail with all-new features like remastered art and effects, volumetric God rays, dynamic depth of field, screen-space reflections, and more. Friends, Skyrim Special Edition makes your PC mods and consoles into full power.

Just a few things changed from SE to L, legendary let us legendary our skills had all the DLC, or should. SE had DLC, but not necessarily all, and you may or may not legendary, there was a level cap, around 82 with all skills at 100.

Getting over level 140, where I seem content in my tree skill choices by perk points regardless of the extent possible, wasn’t possible.

They still omit things from the Original, the initial preordered version, which seemed geared towards gaining by book reading, for instance, the more books you read of tales of glory, the Bard’s would have more songs,

I had around 30, and a couple of other perks from reading, unique dialogue and such, recipes. The biggest difference, inclusivity, which and how they combined the overall game aspects, whole pack, legendary, or partial, special, editions.

Better would be a true legendary version, though, that seems unlikely, but something to watch for in sequels, being given less than a whole full product, and updates removing aspects given in earlier versions. Until the next ‘legendary’ version.

Conclusion: Skyrim legendary edition vs special edition

Skyrim Legendary Edition differs from Skyrim Special Edition in a few key areas.

  1. Skyrim LE was released for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC only. It was essentially the base game with the three main DLC’s released for it, that being Hearthfire, Dragonborn, and Dawnguard.
  2. Skyrim SE was released so that the Xbox One and PS4 could have Skyrim. In addition to that, Bethesda updated the graphics which looked really nice at the time.
  3. Skyrim SE also released with mod support. Sadly, the mods were limited to 5GB and 2.5(?) GB on the PS4.
  4. SE was also later released for the Nintendo Switch but without mod support. LE was never released for any Nintendo console, unlike SE.
