AMOLED vs OLED: Which is Better and Why?

OLED stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode. It is a thin-film display technology that contains OLED, an organic material that emits light when current is passed through it.

OLEDs display much better blacks and consume less power when displaying darker colors since OLEDs are always off unless electrified individually.

AMOLED or Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode is more of a step forward from the OLED display technology. TFT technology is very crucial to AMOLED.

An active matrix of OLEDs are deposited on a TFT plane which activates on receiving electrical currents, these TFT arrays act as switches for each pixel and also contain the storage capacitor which allows for larger displays.

AMOLED is actually a type of OLED and its advantage is that it offers no restriction on screen size while OLED does since the AMOLED screens have a TFT capacitor.

OLED is made up of thin layers of the organic component which emits light when current is passed through it. In this technology, each pixel transmits its own light. On the other side, AMOLED consists of an additional layer of thin film transistors (TFTs).

OLED and AMOLED are used in area of display. OLED is short for organic light emitting diode, and AMOLED is the short for active matrix organic light emitting.

So, the difference should be with or without an active matrix. Generally, the OLED display with a back panel of thin-film transistors (TFTs) is called AMOLED.

The TFT is a device functions as a switch, it can control the pixel on or off. So, with the TFTs back panel, we can control the sub-pixel in the AMOLED display accurately. It is necessary for a high-quality display, especially in large-size displays.

Amoled is active matrix OLED. Active matrix is method of accessing pixels.

Actually I highly doubt if OLED is inferior vs AMOLED & AMOLED can be any size argument, because

  1. Samsung has no AMOLED TV (even small 32inches, only “micro” 10inch tablets).
  2. Samsung QLED TV is inferior vs LG OLED., which solely excels in brightness only.

AFAIK OLED vs traditional LED: LED has only white lightning, whereas OLED has RGBW light for every pixel to shine on RGB colored pixel.

This also explains why LG OLED TV (Sony Panasonic Philips are all using LG panels) is so much better looking & more expensive vs Samsung QLED (which only brighter as for whatever Quantum bullshit means).

OLED covers both passive (POLED) and active (AOLED) types of displays.

Passive means that the display is refreshed, Active means there is one transistor for each pixel/segment. AMOLEDs have a sharper image and contrast but cost more.

In the old days, we used a CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) display for our PCs. CRT displays were big and ugly. They lacked the great quality we find in today’s displays.

It was a must that they become replaced by a better technology called LCD (Liquid Crystal Display). LCDs provided better quality with thinner screens and became very popular for PC users.

When smartphones and tablets became the dominant devices, the need for screens that suit this kind of devices appeared.

We needed screens that provide great quality outdoors and can be viewed from different angles. This led to the rise of different display technologies.

Which is better: OLED or AMOLED

These two terms can’t really be compared. An AMOLED is a general term for an active-matrix OLED. All smartphone-sized and larger OLEDs are AMOLEDs, for example (TVs, Samsung’s OLEDs, LG’s, etc).

Super AMOLED is Samsung’s brand for its AMOLED displays which include a built-in touch layer. So you cannot really compare.

That being aside, it is generally believed by most display experts and consumers that Samsung’s Super AMOLED displays are the best among all mobile OLED displays.

Some customers of Samsung’s Super AMOLED do not call them so (for example Apple is using Samsung’s OLEDs in the iPhone X but it does not call them Super AMOLEDs).

AMOLED also provides better viewing angles than IPS LCD. Whites on IPS LCD are better than AMOLED while blacks are better on AMOLED.

Manufacturers apply different standards, add improvements to the technologies they use. Those different implementations greatly define screen quality.

Each manufacturer is trying to overcome the limitations of the technology they are using. While there’s no absolute winner, it finally comes to the user to balance between the advantages and disadvantages of the technology he wants to use.

Also, adapting your usage to fit the best performance of the screen should make you happy with your screen whatever technology it uses, so it’s very useful to know the features of each technology.

However, it would be great to have a technology which fixes all problems, although that is not practically possible yet.


AMOLED stands for Active Maxtrix OLED and is a subset of OLED technology in general, and display specifically.

OLEDs (Organic Light Emitting Diodes) are comprised of carbon-based materials that are engineered to function as a solid-state light-emitting diode.

In the AMOLED application, a thin-film transistor array is used to individually address pixel-sized OLEDs. An array of these OLED pixels create a video display.

Which one is better? look at the advantage and disadvantages of both the screen types and decide what your requirements are and what tradeoff you can do for that.

Advantages of OLED Display:

  1. OLED is brighter than LED Because of the organic material in it.
  2. They are cheaper. Easily produced.
  3. The field view of the OLED Display is more than 170 degrees.
  4. It is lighter.

Advantages of AMOLED Display:

  • Faster screen refresh rates. That’s something for the gamers with an unending desire of FPS!
  • Variety in display sizes. (Perhaps make a 10-inch smartphone? Oh wait those are called tablets)
